Forney Wellness – Medical

Ashley Howell is a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach and Lifestyle Educator with over 15 years of experience in nutrition and wellness counseling and 5 years of experience working in a Functional and Lifestyle Medicine-focused Internal Medicine Clinic.

In 2000, after graduating from college, Ashley had a life-changing experience while working at a compounding pharmacy in Austin, Tx. Being exposed to “alternative” therapies and nutritional supplements every day created what Ashley calls an “ah-ha” moment in regards to her own health, which was failing at that time.

For two years she worked as a CPhT alongside registered pharmacists also certified as clinical nutritionists and quickly realized she could change, not only her own health for the better, but the health of others using lifestyle medicine and complementary nutritional therapies.

She continued her education through the online CE courses offered through the NIH and IFM and eventually enrolled at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to complete her certification as a holistic health coach and non-prescribing healthcare provider.

In 2012, she was certified as a FirstLine Therapy Lifestyle Educator and currently directs the FirstLine Therapy program at Forney Wellness.

In 2016, Ashley became certified as a Functional Medicine Health Coach through the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy program and plans to sit for the ICHWC national board certifying exam for health and wellness coaches in September of 2017.

Ashley is passionate about speaking publicly on functional nutrition and therapeutic lifestyle change. In 2015, she was honored to be invited to speak at the Lifestyle Medicine Summit in Phoenix on the role of health coaching in clinical practice.

She is currently speaking nationally for the Metagenics MAPS program on the critical role health coaches and lifestyle educators play in the medical community. She believes the functional/lifestyle medicine approach to patient care has became a flame of hope in healthcare today and is honored and humbled to be just one small ember fueling the fire.

Ashley’s passion for healthy living and love for people is evident in every encounter she has with our patients, with her surrounding community and with her family of five. Not only is she intent on making a positive impact on the health of those around her, but in the medical community as well – supporting health care providers that address the root cause of chronic disease instead of simply band-aiding symptoms with medications.

When asked, “What is a health coach”, Ashley often refers to this simple but powerful response from Dr. Mark Hyman;

“Health coaches help people work through the obstacles that they have, to help them apply the science of functional medicine…” – Dr. Mark Hyman (FMCA ‘Ask the Expert’ Interview 2016)
